Delia, in Tanzania we have been looking at milk trading and the fact that men are said to be mostly in the formal trading system and women in the informal: women produce milk and sell it to their neighbours who consume it – a short value chain we now little about. We want to start working on an assessment of gender issues in trading (and will soon do so in Uganda with a student) and look at what milk safety issues occur in the short/informal value chain. This gender component could be added to the project you suggest.

This is great. Let us be clear about the research elements of the ‘taking to scale’ aspects, as well as any continuing or new research that should be undertaken to continue to inform solutions?

Delia. I agree this I an area that is ripe for scaling. We have the proof of concept. What is missing is how do we take this to scale. Who would be the key players?

…. and linking smallholders to markets is the key incentive need for them to invest in intensifying production and the virtuous cycle of goods that leads on from that. Breaking the barriers that exclude smallholders from markets is a prerequisite for sustainable intensification.
