I think they could benefit immensely from improved yields of vaccine virus, an improved thermostable formulation, and a means of quality control (moisture content and virus stability analyses). The availability at ILRI of a state of the art lyophilizer, moisture content analysis equipment, improved cell lines for PPRV culture and a biodigester capable of improving virus yields compared to current methods makes this a promising venture that is likely to result in the availability of an improved vaccine in the market.

Would very much like this to become reality.

What benefits could be gained by improved control, and by whom?

Not only is it directly relevant to the important case of PPR but to the wide array of vaccines requiring a cold chain for delivery. It is my layman’s view that ILRI should develop a strong capability in thermostabilization so as to make more of the available vaccines, that are sitting on the shelf hardly used, more accessible to users. It is a capability that will help get new vaccines developed by ILRI into use. The need for cold chains is a major impediment to getting vaccines into wide spread use.
