  • Improved decision-making to elicit appropriate responses that lead to desired outcomes
  • Understanding why we do the things we do (factors, processes)
  • Their consequences, learning from them, both the good and the bad (outcomes, impacts)
  • And how we could do things better (tools, policies, strategies)

Exploring gender perceptions of livestock ownership https://virtual.ilri.org/presentation/exploring-gender-perceptions-of-livestock-ownership/ https://virtual.ilri.org/presentation/exploring-gender-perceptions-of-livestock-ownership/#comments Sun, 10 May 2015 17:38:05 +0000 https://virtual.ilri.org/?post_type=presentation&p=528 Background:

  • Ownership of Livestock (OL) assumed to increase agricultural productivity and food security
  • OL by women assumed to improve their control over productive resources, gender equity and food security
  • Changes in OL used in surveys to assess impact

The problem:

  • What are the local understandings of ownership by gender?
  • Does OL translate into control?
  • How do concepts of ownership affect household food security?

Paper: Galiè A., A. Mulema, A. M. Mora Benard, S. Onzere & K. Colverson 2015:

‘Exploring gender perceptions of resource ownership and their implications for food security among rural livestock owners in Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Nicaragua’.

Agriculture & Food Security, 4 (1), 2. http://www.agricultureandfoodsecurity.com/content/4/1/2

Key question:

‘What do women and men associate ‘ownership of livestock’ (OL) with?

Prospects for collaboration:

There are several linkages that we regard as critically important, but we are struggling to fund.

  • targeting
  • modeling
  • high end computer science
  • electronics

View the presentation and consider the following questions:

  • Is this good science? (Is it important; is it robust; is it relevant; is it in demand)
  • Does it help us reach ILRI strategic objectives?
    • science-based practices that achieve better lives through livestock
    • compelling scientific evidence persuasive for smarter policies and bigger investment
    • increased capacity to better use livestock science and investments for better lives through livestock.

AND does this give you any Ideas as to how to leverage work with other programs for a bigger effect?

Sustainable Intensification: ASSP https://virtual.ilri.org/presentation/sustainable-intensification-assp/ https://virtual.ilri.org/presentation/sustainable-intensification-assp/#comments Sat, 09 May 2015 18:58:51 +0000 https://virtual.ilri.org/?post_type=presentation&p=420 Back to ASSP

Research focus:

  • Sustainable Intensification (SI): production increased without adverse environmental impact and without the “cultivation” of more land. i.e. efficiency
  • Several ILRI-led projects are researching innovations to support this aim (Africa RISING, ZimCLIFS, LIVES).
  • How can systems evolve to be more productive without compromising sustainability?

Livestock Production and Environment https://virtual.ilri.org/presentation/livestock-production-and-environment/ https://virtual.ilri.org/presentation/livestock-production-and-environment/#comments Sat, 09 May 2015 18:43:32 +0000 https://virtual.ilri.org/?post_type=presentation&p=416 Back to LSE

Research focus:

  • Agricultural food and feed production is responsible for approx. 30% of anthropogenic GHG emissions (incl. emissions due to land use change)
  • Livestock production does account for approx. 12-14% of anthropogenic GHG emissions (via ruminant CH4 emissions, and N2O and CH4 emissions by manure management), and is  a major driver of land use change (15% of anthropogenic GHG emissions)
  • In addition, livestock production causes environmental degradation with regard to e.g. soil C stocks and soil fertility, water quality/ quantity, and biodiversity
  • Livestock is a major asset for smallholders. Livestock allows to effectively make use of land unsuitable for cropping.

An improved vaccine for East coast fever https://virtual.ilri.org/presentation/an-improved-vaccine-for-east-coast-fever/ https://virtual.ilri.org/presentation/an-improved-vaccine-for-east-coast-fever/#comments Sat, 09 May 2015 17:51:38 +0000 https://virtual.ilri.org/?post_type=presentation&p=407 Back to Vaccines

Rationale

1.East coast fever is the most important  cattle disease  in Eastern and central Africa.

2.There is a live vaccine but there are constrains with it.

3.Therefore, we are working on an improved vaccine.

Vaccines are among the most effective disease inventions deployed; many vaccines if they exist are sub-optimal.

Program priority diseases: East Coast fever (ECF)  and contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP) [RVF, ASF, vectors, wild-life reservoirs]
