Exploring gender perceptions of livestock ownership

  • Background:

    • Ownership of Livestock (OL) assumed to increase agricultural productivity and food security
    • OL by women assumed to improve their control over productive resources, gender equity and food security
    • Changes in OL used in surveys to assess impact

    The problem:

    • What are the local understandings of ownership by gender?
    • Does OL translate into control?
    • How do concepts of ownership affect household food security?

    Paper: Galiè A., A. Mulema, A. M. Mora Benard, S. Onzere & K. Colverson 2015:

‘Exploring gender perceptions of resource ownership and their implications for food security among rural livestock owners in Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Nicaragua’.

    Key question:

‘What do women and men associate ‘ownership of livestock’ (OL) with?
