  Forage into Use: transformation of the forage sector in East and Southern Africa for improved productivity and reduced environmental footprint of livestock

  Forages are sorely underused in SSA. Too much time has been spent on traditional technology push approaches. A fresh systems level approach is needed. Application of this new approach could transform livestock productivity in smallholder systems at the same time as sorting out a series of environmental issues that surround livestock production. The approach would focus on four things:

  • A series of multi-stakeholder platforms to provide a space for key actors at local and national level identify and address key blockages to forage use in smallholder systems.
  • A comprehensive capacity development effort aimed at enhancing the capability of local actors to target appropriate feed interventions to local contexts
  • Independently functioning seed supply systems, mainly in the private sector, to tackle the core issue of germplasm supply that has held back diffusion of forages in the past.
  • Practical whole system demonstrations of the impact of improved forages on livestock productivity and environmental integrity
