Climate-smart Brachiaria Program

  • Rationale for research

    • Livestock form livelihood of small holder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa.
    • SSA has the lowest livestock productivity in the world.
    • Shortage of quality forages is major constraints for livestock in SSA
    • Brachiaria are native grasses adapted to drought & low fertility soils.
    • Extensively grown pasture in tropics but not in Africa.
    • Program aims to explore & promote Brachiaria as cultivated pasture in the region to increase livestock productivity
