Understanding dynamics of intra-regional trade in food staples in COMESA region
Achieving regional integration through trade is one of the key pillars in the COMESA treaty
The treaty considers regional trade as is important in achieving regional food self-sufficiency
Various efforts to enhance regional trade have been undertaken by governments, RECs, private sector and development partners including:-
Simplified customs procedures, establishment of one-stop border posts, introduction of structured trading systems, improvement of transport infrastructure, reduction of administrative requirements, reduction of roadblocks among others.
Results:
Tariffs have reduced but significant ones remain especially in agricultural trade
Intra regional trade has increased but trade in staple commodities remains low (about 12% of staple food imports)
There is need to understand the extent to which integration efforts are achieving intended results
