    • Aflatoxins: a food security threat across the crop-livestock interface

  Jagger Harvey is a Research Scientist at the Biosciences eastern and central Africa-International Livestock Research Institute (BecA-ILRI) Hub; an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow with the University of Queensland /Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Security (QAAFI); and a fellow with International Science & Technology Practice & Policy (InSTEPP), University of Minnesota.  Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, he speaks English, French and Creole.

  Harvey initiated and serves as project leader for the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID)-funded BecA-Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO; Australia’s national science agency) flagship project Capacity and Action for Aflatoxin Reduction in Eastern Africa (CAAREA).

  Harvey also leads components of two projects under the Sustainable Crop Production Research for International Development initiative; the projects in which BecA is involved are funded by the United Kingdom (UK) Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and (through a grant awarded to BBSRC) the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

  Harvey is a plant molecular geneticist focused on devising strategies for increasing food security through characterization and mitigation of plant diseases affecting smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).  He holds a BSc in Biology and Natural Sciences and Mathematics from Washington and Lee University; a PhD in Genetics from University of California, Davis for research identifying resistance genes to mycotoxin-induced plant programmed cell death; and was a US National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Sir Prof David Baulcombe’s laboratory at The Sainsbury Laboratory and Cambridge University, discovering a secondary layer of RNA silencing-based antiviral defense in plants.

  At the Hub, Harvey conducts research and capacity building focused on crop diseases affecting important crops in the region.  Selected projects in which he is involved are highlighted below.  Harvey is keen to explore further opportunities for research and capacity building that can have an impact on food security in eastern and central Africa, and beyond.
